New Caledonia, located in the South-West Pacific, is made up of a main island, Grande Terre, as well as several islands and atolls. With a total surface area of around 19,100 km², over 88% of which is covered by Grande Terre, this territory offers a great diversity of ecosystems. The coral reefs, covering some 8,000 km², are among the most diverse in the world, with formations such as barrier reefs, fringing reefs, atolls and coral banks. Marine biodiversity is estimated at around 15,000 species, with the presence of emblematic species such as sea turtles, humpback whales and dugongs. The ecosystem services provided by coral reefs and associated ecosystems have an estimated annual economic value of 405 million euros. New Caledonia also has several marine protected areas and monitoring networks to preserve these ecosystems. New Caledonia's coral reefs are generally in very good health.
