Timetable
Museums generally close around 5pm with a break between 12 and 1pm. On Sundays, most establishments are closed.
To be booked
Outside of Nouméa, it is best to reserve guided tours or at least make sure they will take place. For all tours that require a guide, especially for customary lands, it is best to send a text message at least 48 hours in advance. It is also best to have a local number if you want someone to answer the phone!
Budget & Tips
Most of the Caledonian museums charge a fee of 1 000 CFP maximum. It is often free for children under 12 years old, and those who are under 18 years old, who have a student card, those over 65 years old... get a discount.
Main events
Don't miss typical celebrations such as the Avocado Festival which takes place every year in Maré at the end of April or beginning of May. The avocado is indeed Maré's reputation throughout New Caledonia. To be eaten with sugar or with a vinaigrette or cut into strips with eggs and bacon in the morning for breakfast.
For sportsmen, the marathon in August is a good way to discover the bays of Noumea while enjoying a great atmosphere! The program includes three races: the international marathon (42 km), the half-marathon (21 km) and the 10 km of Nouméa. For the runners, many refreshments and misters are available along the course. Many participants from Australia and Japan will raise the level. Animations are organized for the spectators.
Guided tours
Be careful, when you visit beaches, caves... located on customary land, it is sometimes necessary to be accompanied by a guide (or to pay an entrance fee).
On the island of Lifou, don't miss the guided tours of the vanilla plantations for example to discover how vanilla is cultivated.
And in Noumea for example, the guided tour of the Nouville prison allows you to discover an important part of the island's history!
What's very local
Be careful, we take care to respect the customary lands and the preserved places! Remember to take a guide when necessary and have some change with you, it is sometimes necessary to deposit an entrance fee in a small box.
