Timetable
Gourmet shops (patisseries, chocolate shops, etc.), cafés and tearooms are open every day, from morning to mid- or late afternoon (some may be open into the evening, especially cafés). Smaller shops often have a rest day, usually Sunday or Monday. Opening hours may also be reduced out of season. As for bars, they close around 2 a.m. (some are open as early as 10 a.m.).
Budget & Tips
If you're looking for a drink without spending too much money, look out for happy hour, at around 5pm/6pm. Cocktails are sometimes half-price.
What's very local
For a handful of euros, the honey bolo, typical of Madeira, is a pastry that holds the body well. Perfect for regaining your strength during a hike. For a refreshing drink, head for the bars in Funchal's old town, particularly the Venda Velha, where locals like to meet up to sip a glass of poncha while shelling peanuts...
Smokers
Smoking is banned in public places: gourmet shops, cafés, tea rooms and bars are no exception.
