Practical information : Eating out Cyprus
Timetable
Lunch (from the locals) often starts around 2pm or even after, and dinner rarely before 9pm or 10pm. But it is not uncommon for an establishment to also serve coffee and snacks from 9am onwards.
Budget & Tips
In the South as well as in the North, a "gyros" (or "Greek" or "Turkish" sandwich) will wedge you in for a small price. Otherwise, the taverns serve rather cheap traditional dishes, with additions around 15 € per person.
What costs extra
In restaurants, bread is sometimes charged (per person) and water is often arbitrarily supplied in mineral water bottles. Otherwise, as in most countries where service is included, it's customary to leave a tip of 5-10% of the bill.
The local way
Except in fancy or international restaurants, you'll be happy to order mezzes to share and where everyone can take a bite rather than individual dishes.
To be avoided
Food is not always very good in Cyprus, both in the south and in the north, especially in the more touristic areas. As everywhere, we recommend avoiding menus translated into ten languages..
Kids
Children are welcome everywhere and well catered for. In the South, there are often English-style high chairs for babies in restaurants.
Smokers
In the South, the ban on smoking inside establishments is rather strictly enforced. In the North, it is a little less so.
Tourist traps
Apart from running away from the robbers, nothing serious to report..
