Practical information : Accomodation Malta
Budget & Tips
Expect to pay between €50 and €130 for an apartment or double room in a 3-star hotel or resort. For those on a budget, there are still a few guesthouses available at around €60 per night, although the number is dwindling. For a luxury hotel, expect to pay from €140 to €300 and more. Budget travelers can opt for youth hostels, especially in the Sliema and St Julian's areas. Membership of the International Youth Hostel Federation is compulsory for hostels in the network, but can be purchased on site, before your first night. Whatever your accommodation, you'll have to pay an environmental tax of €0.50 per day and per person (rarely mentioned in the advertised price).
As a general rule, the low season runs from February to March, and picks up again from October to the end of November.
To be booked
High season runs from June to the end of September. During this period, hotel prices are more than double, or even triple, those of the low season. Generally speaking, it's imperative to book several weeks in advance from mid-April onwards, as hotel occupancy rates in Malta are fairly high all year round. If you book too late, you run the risk of hotels already being full.
What's very local
Farmhouses are traditional houses, often very well renovated, which are increasingly being rented out, particularly in Gozo. They offer every comfort for a couple, one or more families, and are often equipped with a swimming pool. Prices vary according to time of year and standard of accommodation, but often skyrocket as soon as the weather turns warm. This type of accommodation is best suited to those on a comfortable budget, or those wishing to share their accommodation.
Apartment hotels are popular with many tourists, especially Anglo-Saxons, as they combine the advantages of a traditional hotel (reception, maintenance, service) with the autonomy and comfort of an individual studio. They are grouped into four categories, from first to fourth class. For more information, visit https://maltahotel.net, https://holiday-malta.com and https://www.choiceholidays.eu.
For food lovers
All guesthouses and most hotels offer breakfast, often in buffet form, with an emphasis on Anglo-Saxon and German wishes, the mainstay of the clientele: bacon, small grilled sausages, porridge, etc. These are always hearty, but not always unforgettable. They're always hearty, but not always unforgettable. Make sure you specify when booking whether they are included or not. If they aren't, it's easy to find a nearby cafeteria or café serving traditional English breakfast, or even pastries.
Smokers
The anti-smoking law applies here as in other establishments. With a tolerance for terraces and balconies.
