Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Thailand
Timetable
Large stores and shopping malls are generally open from 10am to 8pm, every day of the week, especially in large cities and seaside resorts (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Phuket...). Smaller stores in smaller towns are more likely to be open between 8am and 6pm, and closed on Sundays.
Budget & Tips
The cost of living is significantly lower in Thailand, and bargains are available, particularly in electronics, telephony and clothing. The government has set up a VAT refund system (7%) for all travelers to encourage shopping in the country. The refund applies to items costing more than 2,000 baht purchased in a store displaying the words "VAT refund for tourists". The total amount must be over 5,000 baht and the purchase must be made at least 60 days before departure. Ask the shopkeeper for a form to fill in, then present this form at the airport (allow extra time for this).
Sales
The Thailand Grand Sale is a sales period in Bangkok and throughout the country. Dates vary, but are always between June and August. Stores in major shopping centers (Terminal 21, Central World, etc.) sell off their wares, with discounts ranging from 10% to 80%. If you see a logo representing a red bag, the sales have begun!
What's very local
Thais are crazy about shopping, and sometimes spend their days in the big shopping malls, which are also air-conditioned to escape the heat.
Don't hesitate to haggle over prices in the markets and small boutiques, as the first price offered is often the full price, the farang price in short...
Tourist traps
Common sense is all it takes to avoid scams. Of course, if someone offers to buy jewelry, gold or precious stones at rock-bottom prices, don't be fooled! If you think you're being scammed, don't hesitate to call the tourist police on 11 55.
