This Lent lasts three months, during which the monks are required to stay in the temples.
The date of the beginning of this Lenten period varies. Khao Phansa lasts three months, during which bonzes are required to remain in the temples and strictly observe their religious duties. It's also an opportunity for young Thais to make a retreat and perform a kind of communion, for which they organize a party with their friends and exchange their white novice robes for the yellow bonzes', in a symbolic farewell to the world. After all, you don't enter the orders for good in Thailand the way you do in Europe.
