Orthodox Easter is a time of great festivities throughout the country, after a long period of fifty-five days of fasting.
Orthodox Easter is a time of great festivities throughout the country. It marks the culmination of a long period of 55 days of fasting from meat, milk and eggs, and complete fasting until 3pm. The last day is fasted entirely, often all night long, for the duration of the service, which ends in the early hours of the morning. During Fasika, the sacred books and treasure objects, usually hidden in the maqdas behind a curtain (also known as the holy of holies) where only the priests can go, are brought out for all to see.
