Mesqal is a celebration commemorating Empress Helena's discovery of the cross where Jesus Christ was crucified.

Mesqal, or Meskel, is a celebration that commemorates, in Ethiopian Orthodox Christian legend and faith, the discovery by Empress Helena in 326 of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. This religious festival, one of the country's most important, has been held in Ethiopia for over sixteen hundred years. Several parades and night parades are organized in several cities around the country, including Meskel Square in Addis Ababa. There are also major festivities in Lalibela, Aksum, Gondar and Bahar Dar.
