To guarantee a certain level of comfort without breaking your budget, opt for a bed and breakfast, hostal or hostel. They generally offer a warm welcome and are usually run by foreigners (Americans, Canadians, Europeans...), but many are also run by Costa Rican families, for a more authentic experience. These establishments vary in comfort and price (from US$50 to US$100 per night on average). They provide access to kitchen facilities, Internet... Finally, prices generally include breakfast, but not taxes (13%).

The country is well provided with hotel resources of all categories in all provinces of the country, even the most remote. However, it is showing more and more limitations in the face of the tourist boom. During Carnival, Holy Week or the end of year holidays, you may have difficulty finding a place that suits your taste and budget if you have not made reservations beforehand. During the low season, you will have no trouble finding a place to stay. Be aware that in May and October, many accommodations close due to the rainy season. So remember to make contact before you go.

What's very local

Cabinas and lodges abound in Costa Rica. Thanks to its "nature capital", the country has attracted many national and international investors, as well as numerous establishments of comfort and charm in the middle of nature. Isolated paradises, these small individual and high-end cabins are generally scattered in a natural setting. Numerous farms(fincas) are also scattered throughout the country. They are generally managed by agrotourism associations. You can spend the night there for an average of 20 US$ in a single room or in a dormitory.

For food lovers

The Pinto Gallo is the Costa Rican breakfast par excellence! It is served in most hotels. For those who prefer sweet to savory, don't worry: you will also find continental breakfasts.

Smokers

Smoking is not allowed in public places in Costa Rica, and hotel rooms are one of them. If you really need to, just ask: some dedicated areas are reserved for smokers.
