The equivalent of "Mardi Gras" for Icelanders, but some would say it's above all a great opportunity to feast!
It is the equivalent of "Mardi Gras" for Icelanders, although some would say that it is above all a good opportunity to enjoy a variety of savoury dishes! This feast day is indeed an ode to food, as delicious dishes made from salted meat, peas and cabbage are eaten to satiation. In restaurants, the menus for Sprengidagur are usually very tasty, and the opportunity to enjoy a good meal while taking part in a local tradition. Sprengidagur is followed by Öskudagur or "Ash Wednesday".
