The equivalent of St. Patrick's Day for Icelanders! No big festivities, but a good way to meet locals.
Beer Day in Iceland is the equivalent of St. Patrick's Day in Ireland, and with good reason! On March1, 1989, after more than 70 years of prohibition, the ban on drinking beer in Iceland was lifted, and people took to the streets to drink this long-prohibited beverage. Since then, Icelanders have celebrated this day as a tribute to their history. Although there are not necessarily any major festivities associated with it, the bars are likely to be a little lively on this day, and it's an opportunity to meet many locals.
