During Öskudagur, Icelandic children parade in disguise in the streets and demand sweets from shopkeepers and locals.
The day after Bolladagur is Öskudagur or Ash Wednesday, a popular day for Icelandic children. Icelandic children walk through the streets in disguise with small bags of ashes called oskupokar. The ashes are pinned on the clothes of strangers, like a joke. They also go and ask for sweets from shopkeepers and locals in exchange for a dance or a song. Beware, even if this festival can evoke Halloween, it has its origins in the Catholic tradition of Ash Wednesday.
