Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Jordan
Timetable
Stores generally open around 10am and close around 7pm. But in Amman in particular, some are open until 10pm, so that locals can succumb to the temptation of shopping even in the evening. Opening hours are always restricted during Ramadan, and stores close before nightfall.
Budget & Tips
You'll be able to pay for your purchases by credit card in the larger towns and cities and at the major retailers. It's best to stock up on cash if you're away from urban or tourist centers.
Sales
There is no official sales period in Jordan. Retailers act and react according to the overall level of sales. The period around Eid-El-Fitr (end of Ramadan) is the least likely to see a discount, as it's a very good season commercially speaking.
What's very local
In small stores or with souvenir sellers for tourists, haggling is customary. You can usually halve the proposed price. Haggling is a game between seller and buyer, and should never lead to invective. Set in your mind the maximum price you're willing to pay for the item you want, and if you don't reach it, let it go with a smile.
Tourist traps
Some drivers or guides will stop you at a roadside Emporium brimming with so-called handicrafts and so-called Made in Jordan items. Prices are prohibitive, as a commission of up to 50% is passed on to your guide (even if he denies it). Unless you've fallen in love with a trinket, it's best to avoid shopping in these places. On the other hand, there's no obligation to have tea there.
