The biggest event on the island! Five days of absolute celebration from the Sunday before Mardi Gras to Ash Wednesday.
It is the great appointment of the year in Martinique. Five days of absolute celebration during which everything stops on the island, which lives only to the rhythm of the carnival parades. This major event takes place during the five "fat" days from the Sunday before Mardi Gras to Ash Wednesday, alternating "vidés" (groups that parade through the streets on foot), floats, music and dances of all kinds. One watchword: everything is allowed! In Martinique, the carnival preparations start at Epiphany, with a succession of parties in the different towns: election of the carnival queen, ball péyi, parades…
On Shrove Sunday, the crowd meets on the Place de la Savane to celebrate the beginning of the festivities to the sound of drums, ti bwa, brass and percussion. On Monday, the roles are reversed during the burlesque wedding. The bride wears her black male tuxedo and the groom walks around in a white dress. On Fat Tuesday, everyone is up before dawn. The streets are filled with people dressed in pajamas and dressing gowns. In the afternoon, the red and black "vidés" are in full swing and the red devils are everywhere! Wednesday, the last day of the festival, is the day of mourning. Dressed in black and white, the carnival attendees come to celebrate the last dance of King Vaval. Each year, the making of the carnival emblem is entrusted to one or more Martinican artists. On Monday also takes place the much awaited parade of the south, which takes place every year in a different city of the south.
