During 3 days, all the gardens of the island come alive to the general public. A must-see!
Coordinated by the Direction des Affaires Culturelles de Martinique, the mission of this national event is to highlight, during three days, the wealth of the various gardens of Martinique, be they private or public (historical, pleasure, shared, agricultural…) and to sensitize the Martinicans to the exceptional heritage of the island. Private individuals can also open their gardens to visitors to help them discover certain skills and traditions. Each garden owner can also join with other gardens in the vicinity, in order to go on open tours with several types of gardens. Throughout the event, the gardens participating in the event offer workshops to learn about gardening, composting, permaculture techniques, local agriculture and Creole herbalism. An event rich in activities, particularly appreciated by Martinican families who are encouraged to preserve nature.
A different theme is chosen each year, usually focusing on intangible practices and knowledge based on oral tradition, which has been transmitted from generation to generation for decades. This event helps introduce this kind of knowledge to the younger generation and to transmit it to ensure its perpetuation, whether it is related to gardens, cultivation practices, or knowledge of the local fauna and flora.
