Practical information : Accomodation Barbados
Budget & Tips
Tourism is one of the mainstays of the Barbadian economy, so you'll find an astronomical number of hotels, most of them splendid, whose prices, even for the most modest, are relatively high. Nevertheless, the differences in rates between high and low season are significant. Rooms in three-star hotels on the south coast can be found for around €95 (instead of €200 in January, for example).
As analternative to hotels, vacation apartments and villas can also berented , either from a hotel complex or a private individual. This can be very economical, depending of course on the standard of the resort or apartment.
There are very fewyouth hostels (one in Oistins), but guest houses are also common. Expect to pay around sixty euros a night.
Finally, there are three campsites, all on the east coast, where you can either bring your own tent or rent one. Prices start at around €35.
To be booked
There are several busy periods when it's best to book, even if there are plenty of hotels: the end-of-year festivities and especially the week of Grand Kadooment at the beginning of August are among them, but on these occasions prices soar!
What's very local
If you want to get closer to the Bajans, there's nothing better than a stay in a guesthouse. And if you're looking for charm, why not stay in a great house, a former plantation? These historic homes offer a magnificent setting and a unique experience. Just allow for a little extra budget.
For food lovers
You'll soon realize that hotel breakfasts are aimed at a predominantly British clientele, with toast, bacon, white beans with tomato sauce and sausages. However, you'll always find a few Barbadian specialties, often savory, such as fish cakes, fried plantains, the famous fried flying fish or, in a sweeter-savory vein, bajan bakes, a kind of small cinnamon and allspice doughnut. On the sweet side, you'll find pieces of cake, and in particular bajan sweet bread, a coconut cake topped with cherries and raisins, baked in a loaf pan.
Smokers
Smoking is prohibited inside a hotel complex, including on balconies. Smoking areas are designated, often in front of the hotel entrance or on the beach (if available). However, don't forget to pick up your cigarette butts.
