Dozens of events organized across the island to celebrate the end of the sugar cane harvest (concerts, festivals, etc.)
"Crop Over", in Bajan Creole, means that the sugar cane harvest is over. Now that the hard work is over, it's time for a whole month of celebrations, culminating in early August with the Grand Kadooment. Dozens of events are organized across the island, and the festivities officially begin with an opening gala and the presentation of the last sugar canes harvested. This is also the occasion to elect the festival's king and queen.
Alongside this, a host of events and concerts take place in the weeks leading up to Kadooment: concerts, craft festivals, markets, culinary exhibitions and more, offering visitors a veritable panorama of the best of Bajan culture. Highlights of the Crop Over season include calypso competitions (including the Pic-O-De-Crop final), and the Junior Kadooment, where children dress up and parade to music before a panel of judges. One of the most festive Crop Over events is Foreday Morning, the big RISE Barbados concert at Kensington Oval, or Soca On De Hill at Farley National Park, a large concert dedicated to this particularly popular Barbadian genre. Two days before the Grand Kadooment, bands gather in the early hours of the morning (1am) to rock Bridgetown until 9am. This is undoubtedly the biggest night-time party of the year.
Please note that some of these events require the purchase of a ticket. Don't forget to check.
