Practical information : Going out Suriname
Timetable
There's no time for a drink in Suriname, and you'll always find open terraces. Of course, things get livelier as night falls. On the other hand, if you want to go to a discotheque, you'd better start late: it usually gets busy from 1 or 2 in the morning. Casinos are also open all day, with more entertainment in the evening.
Budget & Tips
The capital's casinos can be a great place to eat and drink to your heart's content... Provided you know not to leave too much money in the slot machines! And like all casinos, but perhaps even more so because it's the most famous, the Torarica Hotel & Casino often features live shows, concerts and special events in its entertainment areas, offering a high-end entertainment experience. Take a look at the casinos' programming, but there's no need to book or even pay - entertainment is usually offered free of charge to players!
To be booked
There are several notable venues for performances and concerts, offering a variety of live entertainment for locals and visitors alike. Among some of the most popular places to book your place, the Krasnapolsky Ballroom is a versatile venue that regularly hosts concerts, dance shows, cultural events and a variety of artistic performances.
And let's not forget Paramaribo's Andre Kamperveen Stadion: mainly used for sporting events, it also hosts occasional concerts and shows, especially for internationally renowned artists.
The Pakhuys Podium is also worth mentioning: this beautiful cultural venue in the capital offers a platform for local and international artists, regularly hosting concerts, theater performances, art exhibitions and other artistic events.
These venues (and many others) offer a variety of shows and entertainment, from local and international music concerts to theatrical performances, dance shows and special events. Be sure to check the local events calendars for upcoming performances during your visit to Suriname, and book for the event that appeals to you.
Night transport
At night, it's best to take a cab from a tourist spot or from someone you trust. Paramaribo's streets are not necessarily dangerous, but you should avoid walking alone in unfrequented areas.
Age restrictions
In Suriname, the legal age for buying and consuming alcohol is 16. However, it is important to note that regulations may vary depending on the type of alcohol and where it is consumed. For example, in bars, restaurants and discotheques, the minimum age may be 18 to buy alcohol or enter the establishment.
What's very local
Onafhankelijkheidsplein is the emblematic public square in the heart of Paramaribo, a true gathering place for numerous community and cultural events, including open-air concerts, festivals and special celebrations.
Also, Fort Zeelandia, the famous historic site in the center of Paramaribo, occasionally hosts special events, open-air concerts and cultural festivals, offering spectators a unique experience in a historic setting.
