Shops and stores are generally open from 9am to 2pm and from 5pm to 9pm. In very touristy areas, shops and souvenir shops remain open between 10am and 11.30pm.

Budget & Tips

In the most touristy areas, where the offer abounds, compare prices in a few shops before you shop: this way you can try to negotiate.

Sales

The summer sales period in Crete and Greece in general starts on the second Monday of July and lasts until the end of August. In winter, the sales start on the second Monday of January and last until the end of February. Several offers lasting about ten days are very often announced in May or October.

What's very local

All food products that can be found in specialized shops are recommended: cheeses (Cretan Gruyere cheese), olive oil, olives, honey, herbs, herbal teas, spices and of course raki. Handicraft products such as jewellery, reproductions of museum objects, Byzantine icons, ceramics, products of tanners, fabrics, Cretan knives are all local gifts to bring back

Tourist traps

Souvenir shops are overflowing with all kinds of items. Try to rely on your personal taste and, to ensure quality, you'll have to rely on prices: handcrafted items are a little more expensive and always signed. Food products such as oil, honey or herbs, which are of excellent quality, can be found in specialist shops and boutiques
