The small Celtic nation, like a hidden treasure, offers a cultural richness and a palette of magnificent landscapes. Many still confuse Wales and England, yet there are so many things between the two countries: nature, people, atmosphere, history. Welsh identity and culture are very real. A small nation, then, but a strong personality!
A green destination and unsuspected benefits
It is often ignored that Wales is one of the most diverse regions in Great Britain. The three national parks offer a wide variety of landscapes and the highest mountain in Wales and England, Snowdonia (1,085 m). Wales is characterised by a virtual absence of French tourists and provides you with a real change of scenery. As far as landscapes are concerned, this one has nothing to envy from Scotland or Ireland. Sumptuous beaches and majestic mountains, archaeological heritage, Celtic heritage and legends await you there too.
There is also no shortage of original activities in the region, such as the largest zip line in Europe or the Great Little Trains of Wales, period steam trains that have been put back into service. You will also enjoy a more pleasant climate and a lower price/quality ratio than in Scotland or England
A land of legends
You need to love legends to be able to appreciate Wales, as they are an integral part of its history, culture and geography. To each place is attached a legend, which very often concerns King Arthur, the Grail or Merlin - there must be about ten places where Arthur was born or died! An omnipresent figure in Wales, he has become much more than a legend, almost the emblem of the country
The Welsh Castle Route
Did you know that Wales has the most castles per square metre in the world? Despite its small size (300 km from north to south), the country has castles by the hundred. Respected, haunted, visited... They can be classified into three categories to simplify their history: Welsh castles built before the English invasion; English castles, many of which were built in the 13th century by Edward I and his successors; and castles without any defensive purpose, ordered by rich eccentrics
To avoid angering the Welsh people, do not only visit the castles built by Edward I. Of course, they are the most imposing in terms of architecture, but the Welsh ruins are so much more romantic!
The sense of hospitality
A real tradition in Wales! In Welsh history and culture, the guest is sacred. The ancient texts state that the lords of Wales were judged on the hospitality they offered as well as on their military power. Lack of hospitality at the time brought dishonour to the host and his family. Today, Welsh hospitality is still the order of the day and you will really appreciate their hospitality.
With good hearing....
When to leave? Holidaymakers arrive around 15 July, the start date of the British school holidays, which last until the end of August. It is the hottest period but on the other hand the beaches are crowded. Travelling in spring is a real pleasure: the weather is pleasant, the hoteliers are not yet overcrowded and the museums and hiking trails are very quiet.
