Inaugurated in 1824, it was built at the Marshal of France. Its beauty, size and location make it the heart of the city. Recently, taking advantage of the work of the tram service, the esplanade was completely refurbished at a cost of EUR 14 million. This ambitious project, entrusted to architect Bruno Fortier, consisted of restoring its full splendour in respect of its neoclassical architecture.
Semi circular to the south and rectangular to the north, it was first made to pedestrians. Nestled on the ground with a black and white mineral paving, delimiting a wide promenade, it lends itself to modern and épuré urban furniture. The renovation of facades and arcades enabled him to rediscover his red-blue contrast of yesteryear. To the south, the Sun Fountain made new skin and was given water. Finally, two rows of parasols pines in Tuscany symbolizing the banks of the Paillon and allowing a shaded walk have been planted.
In February during the carnival period, the Place Massena colours a thousand lights and lights. With a forest of stands, it becomes the point of passage - and very appreciated - of tanks and battles of flowers of corso.
