A public holiday celebrating the reunification of the Ionian Islands after London relinquished its role as protector.
It is a public holiday in all the Ionian Islands. Following the liberation of Greece and the establishment of the Greek state, the Ionian Islands requested unification with Greece. Britain, France and Russia ratified the Treaty of London on 5 June 1863, in which Britain renounced its role as "protector" of the Ionian Islands. On 21 May 1864, the reunification of the Ionian Islands with Greece became official.
