Saint Spiridon is beautifully celebrated in Corfu four times a year, from Palm Sunday to the first Sunday of November.
Spiridon, Corfu's patron saint, is celebrated on the island four times a year: Palm Sunday, Holy Saturday, August 11 (in memory of the day in 1716 when, according to legend, Spiridon appeared to the Corfiotes, waving a torch and putting the Turkish besiegers to flight) and the first Sunday in November. On each occasion, Corfu's brass bands set off from its church, which is recognizable by its clock and red dome, and march merrily along.
