Practical information : Eating out Alaska
Timetable
In restaurants, lunch is served from 11am until about 2pm and dinner from 5:30pm until 10pm, but often 9pm. You have to get used to having dinner earlier than in France.
Budget & Tips
As everywhere in the United States, it is possible to ask for your meal or menu to take away(take away) or the remains of your plate(doggy bag).
The smallest burger costs 20 US$, the smallest dish 30 US$, without counting the tip (10% minimum). At this price, if you count: starter, main course, dessert and drinks, you can get by for at least 60 to 70 US$ per person in a classic restaurant, more like 100 US$ with alcoholic drinks.
What costs extra
Prices do not include taxes. Prices in restaurants are quoted exclusive of tax and gratuities in the United States. A local sales tax must always be added to the price displayed in stores and restaurants. This tax varies by county and by product. No label, advertisement or brochure ever displays the final price: you have to calculate it. A good surprise: Anchorage, for example, does not charge VAT, you will pay what you see on the label, as is the case almost everywhere in Alaska. Elsewhere, there may be a VAT, but overall it is low.
Tipping: Don't forget it! The tip is 15-20% of the bill in restaurants, and $1-2 for cab drivers. If you pay with a credit card, don't forget to fill in the tip box on the bill yourself, then add it up. Tipping is very much a part of American culture, rewarding value and quality of work, and therefore merit. You will be given bad looks if, like many French people, you don't give anything. It is important to keep in mind that bar or restaurant waiters rely heavily on their tip to live, as their salary is relatively low. We have the Smic, here the tip is a part of the salary, the social protections are not the same. In a bar, we put the tip, at least 1 US$ per glass, in front of the waiter at the counter, not when we leave but when we pay.
The local way
The fish is obviously ultra fresh in Alaska, caught in the open ocean all year round it can be found wriggling along the coast, but going up the rivers from May to September, it can be found inland. If the bears enjoy a paw in the water, don't hesitate to put a good fork in it! Restaurants offer it all over Alaska, a treat, grilled, baked, in any sauce you like. Be sure to ask if it is fresh or frozen in season.
As everywhere in the United States, the dishes are generally very copious, XXL sizes that you can share with two, especially considering the prices of the dishes, do not hesitate
Smokers
Smoking is not allowed in restaurants, and often the ban is also valid on the terrace. You will have to go further away in a dedicated corner or on the parking lot.
