In reference to the discovery of America, on October 12, 1492, this day is the national holiday of Spain and a celebration of Hispanicity.

In reference to the discovery of America on October 12, 1492, this day has been kept as Spain's national holiday and Hispanic celebration, marked by a military parade in Madrid. In Seville, a floral offering is made to the cathedral and placed in front of the mausoleum containing the body of Christopher Columbus. On the same day, a bullfight traditionally takes place in the Real Maestranza to raise funds for the Red Cross. This date also marks the start of the Puente del Pilar, in honor of the Virgin of Pilar.
