And yet, it was difficult to get hold of the famous local farm-ripened cheese, without necessarily making a detour to one of the outlying farms. This lack of visibility has been remedied with the opening of the Maison du Fromage on July 19, 2011.

The Maison du Fromage is designed to raise the profile of this local product, which has been on the market since 1972.
Located near the town center, the store promotes farmhouse cheeses, of course, but also products from the EURIAL dairy and other local products: honey, apple juice, processed freshwater fish products from the FISH BRENNE company, artisan jams, REUILLY wines, etc.
The store was created by the municipality of POULIGNY SAINT PIERRE with the help of the communauté de communes Brenne Val de Creuse and the PNR Brenne, and is run by an association employing 3 shop assistants. The store is open every day except Monday, from 9am to 12:30pm and from 3:30pm to 6:30pm, and on Sunday mornings from 9am to 12:30pm.

The Maison du fromage is just the first step in an ambitious project. Next door, the municipality is creating an inn for cheese tasting.

History of Pouligny Saint-Pierre

Pouligny St Pierre is the 1st appellation of origin for goat's cheese, and the smallest appellation area with only 22 communes located in the PNR Brenne, more precisely in the valleys of the Creuse and Anglin rivers.
40 years ago, we marketed 40 tonnes of Pouligny St Pierre, today we market 300 tonnes, which represents 1.2 million cheeses.

Product description :

Pouligny St Pierre is a cheese made exclusively from whole, raw goat's milk. It is shaped like a slender pyramid with regular edges, a square base, a height of 12.5cm and a small 2.5cm square at the top. It is made from lactic curd by slow coagulation and spontaneous draining. It has a soft, slightly salty texture.
Its exterior shows surface mold. Its rind is vermiculated, ivory-white but may be slightly bluish.

Pouligny St Pierre has a wide range of flavors, enabling it to be enjoyed by a broad public. Lightly ripened, its light taste makes it ideal in salads, cut into small cubes, with walnut oil or on thinly sliced hot toast.
Slightly blue, it will suit the most demanding palates in search of a taste of hazelnut and terroir. Finally, blue-ripened, it will be sought after by lovers of bold, assertive tastes.
To accompany it, tradition is strict: only a good, dry, fruity white wine will fully enhance the pronounced flavor of Pouligny St Pierre.
