LES ÉTANGS DE LA JEMAYE
Discover the timeless charm of the Grand étang de La Jemaye, an oasis of nature and leisure in the heart of the Double forest.
The Grand étang de La Jemaye is one of the jewels of this magnificent ancestral forest of the Double. The site is composed of a vast forest and six connected ponds. Dedicated to swimming and water sports, this site has been developed in such a way as to reconcile the reception of visitors with the protection of natural environments and species. Originally, it was monks living in the abbeys of the Double in the 15th century who created these ponds by clearing the forest. The water reservoirs fed by run-off water ended up forming the aquatic expanses of today. Little did they know that these ponds would become a leisure centre for holidaymakers and locals alike, with beaches, walking and horse-riding trails, canoes, kayaks, a monkey bridge and zip line, an air rifle and archery centre, a beach volleyball court, a children's play area, a skateboard park, fishing lessons, etc. You can go for a walk on the 4.5 to 7 km long hiking trails around the pond, including mountain bikes, horses or ponies (there is even a link with the Parcot farm in Echourgnac), follow a health course or an orienteering course. Wildlife observation posts have also been set up. The best time for birdwatching is in winter, and if you prefer fish, fishing is open from April to September. There is a shop, two snack bars, a traditional restaurant, picnic tables and seating.
