Exceptional estate animated throughout the year by various events such as botanicals, the art season and Christmas decorations
Eudes I, Count of Blois, built his first fortress at the end of the 10th century to watch over the Loire and protect the borders of his territories from attacks by his bellicose neighbors, the Counts of Anjou. His youngest son, Eudes II, had to contend with the impetuous Foulques Nerra, a warrior who was as cruel to his enemies as he was fervent in his faith. He went to the Holy Land four times, building numerous monasteries to atone for his countless crimes and sins. Although this first château withstood four centuries of war and confrontation, it was razed to the ground by a king equally renowned for his cruelty, Louis XI. Rebuilt from 1469 by the d'Amboise family, it was completed around 1510 to create this new château of refined elegance. Catherine de Médicis ceded it to her rival Diane de Poitiers in exchange for Chenonceau. In the 18th century, the north wing was demolished, giving the château its current appearance and one of the finest views of the Loire Valley. The century-old walls witnessed the passing of such celebrities as Benjamin Franklin and Madame de Staël. The buildings of the model farm and the riding arena of the Grandes Ecuries now host a number of exhibitions by contemporary artists, who can also be seen in the superb park and château. This surprising discovery of all the facets of modern art is an excellent introduction to the fairytale world of the International Garden Festival, where guest artists vie with each other in creativity to translate emotions and concepts into ever more extraordinary corners of nature. Each plot is an astonishing discovery, and the marriage of plant and mineral is a success at every turn of the path. Alongside these ephemeral creations, perennial gardens in various parts of the park prolong the pleasure of the spectator. The vallon des brumes (mist valley), with its welcome coolness in summer, is a must-see and a change of scenery.
The Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire's restaurants offer the possibility of lunching on site, to make the most of your day in an extraordinary setting. Throughout the year, various events punctuate the Domaine to the delight of visitors.
