The village name summarizes its history: Chaumont comes from bald mountain, an arid bud on which a gallo-roman oppidum was built. Its fortified village past is still found in the plan of the streets of the village in the form of a spider's web centered on the church and in the moss, a part of which is always visible rue de abominants.
