LAVARDIN CASTLE RUINS
A medieval fortress whose romantic ruins are highly representative of a medieval defensive structure.
For centuries, this fortress, built from the 11th century onwards and constantly reinforced by its successive owners, withstood the attacks of its neighbors from Montoire, then those of Richard the Lionheart's English. Its mighty keep dominating the valley is protected by a set of three enclosures, allowing the defenders to withdraw in the event of an attack. Its last stand during the Wars of Religion proved fatal when Henri IV had it dismantled
