ANCIENT FORTRESS
Old fortress and its 33 m high keep with 5 farms in Mondoubleau, protected by 3 surrounding walls and 14 towers.
The fortress dates back to the5th century, with the construction of a wooden tower. Although visitors are peaceful today, this was not always the case, and its defenders had to repel three attacks by Norman warriors during the 9th century, prompting Hugues Doubleau to erect the stone castle around the year 1000. Protected by 3 perimeter walls and 14 towers, the fortress has withstood all assaults except marl quarrying, which undermined the base of the 33-metre keep, causing it to partially collapse.
