FORD CASTLE
Renaissance pleasure castle, with an imperial tower with slate roof, library and salons.
A unique castle set in the midst of nature, this white mass of tufa stone stands out admirably against a backdrop of greenery, giving it a magical, unreal feel. Built on the square foundations of a Roman camp, then a medieval fortress that withstood Norman attacks, the château became a pleasure residence during the Renaissance. Legend has it that one of the towers was built on an ancient dolmen, and that these beliefs may have given the place its name, Péan, in memory of the god Pan and his healing powers... The stonework is refined, particularly on the "imperial" tower, topped by a slate bell. The architecture is marked by the finesse of the sculptures, machicolations and pilasters framing the bays. The roof structures are imposing. You can visit the chapel, the parapet walk, the library and the salons. The (guided) tour is rich in anecdotes and personalities who have crossed the castle's history, such as Frédéric Chopin, who came as a neighbor and must have played on the piano in the grand salon. The library's collections and riches are, like the château itself, on a human scale, and every visitor will want to feel a little like a squire in this residence steeped in history, but which is never oppressive. For the tech-savvy, the audio-visual history of the château was created by the owner of Le Gué-Péan, one of the designers of Futuroscope. One more reason - if one were needed - to go there!
