CULTURAL TOUR
Cultural visit to discover carved flints, coins, bronze objects and the prehistoric city.
With less than 500 inhabitants, the small village of Verdes does not in any way suggest the importance it had in the most remote times. The human presence is attested by the numerous discoveries of carved flint, coins and bronze objects, proving the existence of a prehistoric city preceding another Gallic and finally Gallo-Roman city. It was at this time that Verdes, one of the most important cities in the region, surely reached its peak, leaving the most striking remains: thermal baths, forum, basilica, palace. The more recent ruins of the castle of Lierville, which belonged to the Admiral de Coligny, take us back to the troubled periods of the religious wars. A visit to the town hall will help you to orient your visit to the village, completed by the ruins of an old chapel that once belonged to the priory of Saint-Marc-de-Verdois, the lime kiln, the Gallo-Roman road, the old washhouses and the Saint-Lubin church built in the 12th century. Verdes is now part of the new municipality of Beauce-la-Romaine.
