THE NAVY FROM SCALU TO PINO
Scalu Marine is 600 m from the village as the crow flies, to the north-west.
Around 1h15 north of Saint-Florent, on the northernmost tip of Cap Corse, Pino is built around 3 key elements: the village clinging to the mountain, the ruined 16th-century Genoese tower and the pretty little Scalo marina with its quiet beach. The latter is located 600 meters from the village as the crow flies, to the north-west. It can be reached via a winding road. This quiet, bucolic little fishing port is seldom visited. Once a simple pebble beach accessed by a ladder - hence its name, as the Latin word scala means ladder - Scalo Marina was a thriving fishing port in the 19th century, with a dozen boats exporting wine, citron, cattle and charcoal, and importing grain, salt, textiles and various utensils. Commercial activity has ceased, but the Scalo marina has lost none of its cachet and is a charming port of call. Pino had a population of almost 600 in 1881. From that date onwards, many inhabitants left for Costa Rica, Venezuela and a number of Caribbean islands to seek their fortune. They went on to build beautiful buildings, the famous American houses. Discover the trompe-l'œil-painted oratory in the center of the village, as well as the Piccioni château, built in part by Antoine Piccioni, mayor in 1849 and benefactor, on a mountainside amid fig, holm oak, plane, cypress and olive trees, overlooking the sea at a height of 170 meters.
