SALINE ROYALE D'ARC-ET-SENANS
The Saline Royale d'Arc-et-Senans is a must-see tourist attraction in Arc-et-Senans, in the Doubs region of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This former 18th-century saltworks, built by architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, is a remarkable example of neo-classical and industrial architecture. It was in operation until 1895 and is now open to the public. Located near the Chaux forest, the Saline Royale offers 13 hectares of space to explore. Visitors can discover the saltworks' 11 buildings, exhibits and gardens. Guided tours are available, as well as self-guided tours using a Histopad digital tablet. Entrance fees vary according to age, and discounts are available for certain groups. There is also a 3-star hotel and restaurant on site for those wishing to extend their visit. The Saline Royale is easily accessible by train from Arc-et-Senans station, or by car via the A36 and A39 freeways.
