The Saline Royale d'Arc-et-Senans is a must-see tourist attraction in Arc-et-Senans, in the Doubs region of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This former 18th-century saltworks, built by architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, is a remarkable example of neo-classical and industrial architecture. It was in operation until 1895 and is now open to the public. Located near the Chaux forest, the Saline Royale is surrounded by 13 hectares of land and is just 5 minutes from the Chaux natural forest, the second largest in France. Visitors can explore the saltworks' 11 buildings, exhibitions and gardens, either on their own or with a guide. A Histopad digital tablet is also available for an augmented visit. Entrance fees vary according to age, and discounts are available for certain groups. There is also a 3-star hotel and restaurant on site for those wishing to extend their visit.
