SAINTE-MARIE-DU-RIVET ABBEY
Abbey in a superb setting in Auros, one of the oldest monasteries in France, a good address for a quiet stay.
Named after the small stream that borders it, the Rivet Abbey dates from the time of Charlemagne. Tradition makes it one of the oldest monasteries in France, the 13th century church includes post-Merovingian remains. It was founded by Benedictines who adopted the Cîteaux rule around 1190. Buffon's brother, Don Charles Benjamin de Buffon, was notably the abbot. Chased out after the French Revolution, the monks were replaced by Cistercian nuns only in 1938. In the marvelous setting of their abbey, ideally situated on the pilgrimage route to Compostela, the nuns of Sainte-Marie-du-Rivet welcome every day those who come on a spiritual journey to spend a night or make a longer retreat. 30 rooms and 40 beds allow for a warm welcome, but it is advisable to give at least one day's notice. It is also possible to stock up on monastic products. For meals, there is a choice between a dining room where guests can exchange during meals or a silent dining room. To be specified on arrival. The Abbey's guesthouse receives families, religious, retreatants and young people for stays in calm and silence. The store offers various monastic products, jams, books for adults and children, cakes, liturgical vestments, scarves, santons, etc.
Opening hours: weekdays from 9:30am to 12pm and from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. Sundays and feast days from 3 to 5:15 pm.
