BALSAM ABBEY
Visit to discover an abbey with a remarkable abbey church and a Flemish altarpiece in a classified site of Baume-les-Messieurs.
In a classified site, discover the mother of Cluny, its architectural ensemble, its abbey church and its Flemish altarpiece. The monastery was founded by Abbot Bernon in the 10th century. The visit of the abbey is a discovery of these different periods, reflecting the history of the monastic communities. The oldest visible parts date back to the 11th century. Excavations carried out in 2011 have identified earlier constructions: a Romanesque church and Carolingian walls. This research has allowed us to better understand the links with Gigny-sur-Suran and Cluny.

Je recommande la visite guidée qui donne pas mal d'information sur l'histoire de cette abbaye et sur la vie des moines et leur origine au moyen age.
