FÊTE DE LA SAINT-JEAN
St. John's Day is an ancient tradition: that of celebrating the summer solstice every year. In Bazas, for example, and just to mention this Gironde town, the Patron Saint of the city has been celebrated since the earliest times of Christianity. The day begins with the re-enactment of the bull tribute ceremony. In the past, the master butchers of the city offered a bull to the bishop and later to the city's jurats. The day ends, as is more common in other cities, with the lighting of the St. John's fires in front of the cathedral. Other events are organized on this occasion throughout the department.
