NOTRE DAME CHURCH

The church of Courtefontaine is one of the few Romanesque buildings in the region to have undergone no further reworking. Regularly presented as the most complete and one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in Franche-Comté, she has been classified as a historic monument since 1875. It is first a simple farm that the augustins implanted here at the beginning of the XII. We must wait until the end of the century, just 1179, for a church to be consecrated. The building is based on the doctrine of order: finding a simple way of life, closer to that of the first Christians and drawing on their architecture. In contrast to the voûtement, the nave and the bas of the church have a structure. A concern for austerity found in the rectangular pillars of the nave. The purity of the lines, the sobriety of the stones and the harmony of volumes give this church a refined aspect reminiscent of the Cistercian architecture.
