ABBEY CHURCH OF SAINT-PIERRE DE GIGNY
Abbey church in Gigny, with panels to help understand its history and architecture
The abbey church is at the origin of the Cluniac movement: its founder Bernon sent, in 909, 6 monks from Gigny (and 6 from Baume) to settle on the lands of the Duke of Aquitaine, in Cluny. Architecturally, it is a testimony of the first Romanesque art, 11th century. The stone building, with octagonal pillars and Lombardy bands visible on the eight-sided dome, was redesigned between 1492 and 1503. Panels help to understand the history and architecture of this important place in the region.
