SAINT MAURICE ABBEY
Benedictine abbey, classified as a historical monument, with a magnificent façade and a remarkable Romanesque portal, to be visited in Blasimon.
Between 721 and 724, Benedictine monks from the Exempts congregation, originally from the Saint-Jean-d'Angély abbey, founded the Saint-Maurice abbey in Blasimon. Classified as a historic monument, the site boasts a remarkable façade and a Roman portal with six voussoirs, a masterpiece of medieval sculpture. The sculptures adorning the portal are among the most impressive of this period in Gironde. The details of the voussoirs are reminiscent of the Sermon des Saintongeais. Explanatory booklets are available for visitors.
