VISIT THE NEW ISLAND
Guided tours and walks to discover all the facets of Ile Nouvelle and its environmental management
Located opposite the town of Blaye, in the heart of the largest estuary in Europe, the Ile Nouvelle is nearly 6 km long and 700 m wide. This island was born from the reunion of Bouchaud Island and Sans-Pain Island (so named in reference to the harsh winter of 1830 which prevented it from being supplied). It is rich in both a dense ecological heritage and a singular history. Until the 1950s, viticulture dominated on this island and its two villages, dating from the 19th century, were home to up to 150 "îlouts" (inhabitants). The island will then experience bad days: vines uprooted, abandoned villages ... In 1991, the island is finally bought by the Conservatoire du Littoral for its exceptional ecological potential and entrusted in management to the General Council. In the summer, walks and guided tours are proposées pour discover all the facets of Île Nouvelle and its environmental management.
