The ruins of a remarkable basilica at Blaye, this ancient necropolis was home to the Merovingian kings.
The Basilique Saint-Romain de Blaye, built in the 4th century, is an ancient necropolis that was home to the Merovingian kings. The most famous person buried here is Lord Roland, well known for his famous song! Damaged during the Wars of Religion, the basilica was finally destroyed between the 17th and 18th centuries when the citadel was built. All that remains today are the ruins, discovered during archaeological excavations around 1969.
