Gîtes de France" is a network, a brand and a label for self-catering accommodation. It was created in 1955 by Senator Emile Aubert, who inaugurated the system in 1951. Today, the Fédération Nationale, an association, represents 47,000 owners and 60,000 rentals in France, many of them in the Jura region. These include bed & breakfasts, gîtes, gîtes d'étapes et de séjours and campsites. They are subject to strict approval and controls. The degree of quality is symbolized by "épis" (ears of corn).
