In 1859, a young Switzerland, Henry Dunant, witnessed the bloody battle of Solferino in Italy, which opposed the armies of Imperial Austria and the troops of the Franco-Sardinian alliance. On the battlefield, there were nearly 40,000 men, dead or dying; and nobody to care for the wounded. Henry Dunant, assisted by the local population, implemented an organization to set up injuries, feed and comfort soldiers. The Red Cross was born in 1863, thanks to five Genevois of the International Rescue Committee, who later became the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). It has a red cross on a white background: the opposite of the Swiss flag. The French Red Cross is a 1901 law association known as a public utility since 1945. With a network of more than 1,000 local delegations, a hundred departmental delegations and more than 500 health, medical-social and training institutions, the French Red Cross ensures a presence throughout France, including in overseas departments and territories (DOM-TOM)). In over 180 countries, the Red Cross is guided by a movement made of seven fundamental principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, volunteering, unity and universality. It offers first aid courses (AFPS +) and help to people (fight against precariousness).
