ARCHIVES DÉPARTEMENTALES DE LA GIRONDE
To respond to the saturation of the streets of Aviau Street and to bring the Departmental Archives into the digital age, the General Council launched, on the Poyenne site, a project to extend its Archives which ended in 2011. Most of the missions are concentrated there, even though the site of Aviau Street remains active. This new building of 7,500 m ² is therefore added to the existing 6,800 m ². The Archives site allows the public to be welcomed under better conditions: large and bright lobby, 84-seat reading room communicating with the inventory room, an auditorium with 100 seats and a renovated exhibition room. The whole history of the department is housed in this building. Here the documents were found to shed light on the conditions of the cleansing of Jews in Bordeaux during the war and to lead the trial of Maurice Papon for example. For us, it is a true treasure where everyone, if patient, can surely find what he is looking for on the history of Gironde. The Archives hosts approximately 13,000 visitors per year and organizes numerous exhibitions. Consultation of documents, whether digitized or not, is performed only in the reading room. Access to this room requires registration with the Archives host bank (proof of identity and home).
