GALLO-ROMAN SANCTUARY
One of the major Gallo-Roman sites of Franche-Comté in Villards, there are ruins of temples and a monumental fountain.
The Sanctuary of Villards d 'Héria is one of the major Gallo-Roman sites in Franche-Comté. It was the main shrine of the Sequanes populating the Jura in the Gallo-Roman era. It was divided into three parts: a sacred zone, an intermediate resting and gathering place of pilgrims, and a seaside set south along the Héria. There are still vestiges of temples, a monumental fountain, swimming pools and trunks. The most unusual assumptions were made: the Sanctuary of Villard d 'Héria would have sheltered Druidic rites, the ermitage of Saint Roman or Carloman monk (uncle of Charlemagne), gold mines or even a city… Egyptian.
