COUSSEAU POND NATURE RESERVE
A reserve with arbutus-wooded dunes, ponds and reed-lined marshes at Carcans.
A listed site since 1976, the Cousseau reserve offers a remarkable overview of the main natural environments of the Landes de Gascogne. A concentration of biodiversity in a pocket handkerchief! Dunes wooded with strawberry trees, ponds and marshes lined with reeds, towering pine forests and soft green clearings... Far from civilization, this natural sanctuary can be discovered along a 7.5 km trail winding through the forest. Discover it on your own, or accompanied by guides from Sepanso - a regional federation of associations for the protection of nature and the environment - on classic or themed guided tours. With a marauding gaze, you can follow in the footsteps of the otter, take a discreet seat to observe the grey crane (between October and February) or examine the history and role of the sea cows, reintroduced to the Reserve in 1990. To get a bird's-eye view, head for the belvedere and the two observation towers. Here and there, illustrated wooden markers present the main animal and plant species, according to the landscapes where they live. One of the reserve's emblems is the Molinie heath, a pretty grass that marks the beginning of the wet heath, a habitat that once covered most of the Landes de Gascogne plateau. Don't forget to bring your Sepanso guide booklet, on sale at the tourist office. Allow 2h30 for the walk. Access forbidden to bicycles. Dogs allowed, but only on a leash.
